Colombia dominates the Giro d’Italia with Nairo Quintana winning the Maglia Rosa and Rigoberto Uran in second place
Nairo Quintana becomes the second Colombian to win a Grand Tour and the first to win the Giro d’Italia. The 24 year old climbing specialist won two stages and finished with a margin of 2 minutes and 58 seconds over compatriot Rigoberto Uran.
“It’s a Giro in which I’ve suffered, more than anyone could imagine,” said Nairo Quintana. “I had physical problems, I wasn’t at 100 per cent, I must have been at 60 per cent of my full potential.“The descent of the Gavias (was the toughest point). I was frozen, tired. Izagirre fed me. That’s what allowed me to continue, and to win.”
Australian Cadel Evans finished in eight place and in his own words was “not satisfied with the result”. Pressed on talks of retirement “My patience and tolerance are not at their greatest right now,” Evans said with a slight laugh. “They are not at their optimal levels, so let’s not think about that please.”
