CycleOps have announced another new indoor trainer, the CycleOps Magnus featuring smart controlled resistance via ANT+ FE-C and Bluetooth Smart at a much lower price point than the CycleOps Hammer that was announced in May, and the Wahoo KICKR and Tacx Neo.

CycleOps have been manufacturing rear wheel based fluid and electronic indoor trainers, and power meters for over a decade now and the new Magnus utilises PowerTap power meter technology to control the electromagnetic resistance. The Magnus will handle 1500 watts resistance and noise is a relatively quiet 69 decibels (claimed) at 20 mph.

Like the Kurt Kinetic Smart Control and the Tacx Vortex, the CycleOps Magnus is priced at the mid to lower end of the smart trainer market and is an ideal entry point for riders to utilize platforms like TrainerRoad, Zwift and CycleOps own CycleOps VirtualTraining.

The Magnus has a power cable from the resistance unit to wall socket and can be controlled via smartphone app or pc, you can also use the Magnus without being ‘smart’ controlled where it will replicate the resistance of a fluid resistance trainer.

Built on the hand built CycleOps Classic Series frame and including the CycleOps’ proprietary clutch knob the Magnus is compatible with bike frames that have 120mm, 130mm and 135mm rear drop outs. Customers will also be able to purchase separately a kit to fit the 142×12 and 148×12 thru-axle standards. The frame has folding legs to make storage more efficient and the feet can be adjusted for uneven surfaces.

The 2 inch roller of the resistance unit will handle 650b, 700c, 26″, 27″, and 29″ wheels with up to a 2 inch tyre.

The CycleOps Magnus is priced at USD $599 with a release date to be announced.
